Fact of the Day: Nigeria’s population is expected to surpass that of the United States by 2050

Nigeria’s population is expected to surpass that of the United States by 2050, according to the United Nations. Furthermore, according to another report by the UN, Nigeria could start to rival China as the second most populous country in the world, by the end of the century. India is expected to become the world’s largest country, passing China around 2028, when both countries will have populations of 1.45 billion. After that, India’s population will continue to grow and China’s is expected to start decreasing.

By 2100, the following African countries could see populations in excess of 200 million: Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Uganda and Niger.

According to latest census figures, Nigeria and the United States each have populations of 168.8 million and 313.9 million respectively.
