South Africa's middle class is a force to be reckoned with

As the ranks of black middle and upper classes have swelled in the 20 years since South Africa’s first democratic election, so too have the aspirations of a wealthy new elite.

It is a trend that is visible in the streets, as flashy BMWs and Mercedes cruise the highways; it is noticeable in bars, where expensive single malt whiskies are often the drink of choice; and it is conspicuous in shopping malls, as ever more brands are introduced to help satisfy the thirst for consumer goods.
