An interview with Spinlet’s CEO, Nkiru Balonwu, and Head of Business Development, Oye Akindeinde
Spinlet is a mobile music download platform founded in 2006 with offices in Lagos, Nigeria; Cape Town, South Africa; and San Francisco, United States.

Spinlet operates Africa’s largest online store for legal sales of home-grown music. The company brings mobile media distribution to Africa’s emerging markets. Spinlet’s technology enables customers to purchase, stream, share, and discover music, while offering integration and storage of users’ music libraries, accessible globally through mobile apps and browsers.

In early 2011, Nigeria-based emerging markets venture capital firm, Verod Capital Management, invested an undisclosed amount in Spinlet, granting Verod a significant stake in Spinlet and strengthening Spinlet’s position for global expansion.

In May 2011, Spinlet launched in Nigeria and since then Spinlet has driven to increase its product availability globally.

As CEO of Spinlet, Nkiru Balonwu is responsible for Spinlet’s business strategy including its vision and mission, budget planning, and day-to-day operations.

In the course of Mrs. Balonwu’s career, she has lived and worked in Silicon Valley, New York, London, and Lagos; and has advised on transactions spanning technology, intellectual property, and media; including major digital distribution and e-commerce agreements, music and video licensing deals, copyright, software, and patent matters.

Nkiru Balonwu has a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Manchester. She also has a Master of Laws (LLM) from University College London (UCL). Mrs. Balonwu has a Doctor of Juridicial Science (SJD) from the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley).
