Nigerian cabinet hints at austere rule

For the best part of six months Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has kept everyone guessing about how he will run Africa’s most populous nation. After announcing his cabinet last week, the fog has finally begun to clear.

Goodluck Jonathan — the man Mr Buhari defeated at the ballot box in March — was often described as weak, with a laissez-faire style that facilitated all manner of sins by public officials. In contrast, Mr Buhari has brought his austere persona and professional background as an army general to the business of governing a country where corruption had reached unprecedented levels.
