Nigerian travel startup wants to conquer Africa
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) projects Nigeria‘s hospitality market will grow signficantly in the next five years.

Online hotel booking portals are benefiting. Among such portals is hotels.ng. According to Forbes, hotels.ng is Nigeria’s leading hotel booking website.

“What really drove this is that I wanted to build a technology company in Nigeria,” says Mark Essien, the Founder of hotels.ng.

“This business had the technology items that I wanted and it was something that, with my own resources, I could also launch,” Essien adds.

Within the first year of hotel.ng’s launch, the company signed up about 3,000 hotels and attracted over $225,000 in investment.

In May 2015, hotels.ng raised $1.2 million from the Omidyar Network, the investment vehicle of eBay Founder Pierre Omidyar, and EchoVC Pan-Africa Fund, a seed-stage technology fund.

Hotels.ng now lists over 7,000 hotels in Nigeria.

Essien is already exploring next steps. “I think the model that we have created here in Nigeria is something that is viable across the rest of Africa. We are very strong in Nigeria. We have built a good brand with the hotels, with the customers; and I think we can replicate the same across he rest of Africa,” says Essien.
