Africa experienced the largest growth in mobile subscriptions of any world region in 2014, according to Analyse Africa’s analysis of data from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
The continent has been the fastest growing since 2009 with an average growth of more than 14 percent per year, reaching a total 884m mobile subscriptions in 2014. In the same period, Africa’s share of world subscriptions has increased from approximately 9.7 percent to 12.7.
Africa’s growth in mobile subscriptions was 7.4 percent higher than East Asia and the Pacific region (5.7 percent), which ranked second. Three of the most significant growth markets within Africa were Mozambique (+48 percent), Democratic Republic of Congo (+31.4 percent) and Ethiopia (+18.9 percent).
