Protea Hotel Abuja

Cape Town-based hospitality company BON Hotels has taken over the management, sales and marketing of four Protea Hotels locations in Nigeria.

BON Hotels has, over the last few months, added Protea Hotel Abuja, Protea Hotel Delta, Protea Hotel Ikeja and Protea Hotel Victoria Island to its recently-formed West African joint venture, BON Hotels International West Africa. Certain hotels will be managed by BON Hotels utilizing the Protea Hotels brand, while others will operate under the BON Hotels name.

Commenting on the transaction, Guy Stehlik said: “This forms part of our broader strategy to be a strong contender in the African hotel management landscape. We are confident that we will be adding significant value to hotel owners by instilling our practices, backed up by our Nigerian and South African teams.”

BON Hotels’ Executive Chairman, Otto Stehlik, is the Founder of Protea Hotels. He is a pioneer in hospitality management in South Africa and has spearheaded the expansion of international hotel brands in Africa.

Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and has experienced a surge of investor interest in recent years, with many companies looking at getting into the Nigerian market. With a vibrant, entrepreneurial population of 174 million (Africa’s largest population), Nigeria is quickly strengthening its position as a commercial hub.

Despite a recent economic slowdown, as is the case with other emerging markets such as China and Brazil, Nigeria is expected to grow at over three percent in 2016, with even higher growth forecasted over the next few years.
